Boxer

“Developed in Germany, the Boxer is a breed of stocky, medium-sized, short-haired dog. The coat is smooth and fawn or brindled, with or without white markings. Boxers are brachycephalic, and have a square muzzle, mandibular prognathism (an underbite), very strong jaws and a powerful bite ideal for hanging on to large prey. The Boxer was bred from the English Bulldog and the now extinct Bullenbeisser and is part of the Molosser group.

The Boxer was first exhibited in a dog show for St. Bernards at Munich in 1895, the first Boxer club being founded the next year. Based on 2007 American Kennel Club statistics, Boxers are the sixth most popular breed of dog in the United States—moving up from the seventh spot for the first time since 2002—with 33,548 new dog registrations during the year.

History
————-
The Boxer is part of the Molosser group, developed in Germany in the late 1800s from the now extinct Bullenbeisser, a dog of Mastiff descent, and Bulldogs brought in from England. The Bullenbeisser had been working as a hunting dog for centuries, employed in the pursuit of bear, wild boar, and deer. Its task was to seize the prey and hold it until the hunters arrived. In later years, faster dogs were favored and a smaller Bullenbeisser was bred in Brabant, in northern Belgium. It is generally accepted that the Brabanter Bullenbeisser was a direct ancestor of today’s Boxer.

In 1894, three Germans by the name of Roberth, Konig, and Hopner decided to stabilize the breed and put it on exhibition at a dog show. This was done in Munich in 1895, and the next year they founded the first Boxer Club, the Deutscher Boxer Club. The Club went on to publish the first Boxer breed standard in 1902, a detailed document that has not been changed much to this day.

The breed was introduced to other parts of Europe in the late 19th century and to the United States around the turn of the century. The American Kennel Club (AKC) registered the first Boxer in 1904, and recognized the first Boxer champion, Dampf vom Dom, in 1915. During World War I, the Boxer was co-opted for military work, acting as a valuable messenger dog, pack-carrier, attack dog, and guard dog. It was not until after World War II that the Boxer became popular around the world. Boxer mascots, taken home by returning soldiers, introduced the dog to a much wider audience and it soon became a favorite as a companion, a show dog, and a guard dog.”

THIS IS THE AFTER EFFECT AFTER THE PUPPY GOT SLAPPED REALLY HARD!! I BELIEVE YOU HAVE SEEN MY OTHER VIDEO, WHICH SHOWS THE PUPPY BEFORE IT GOT SLAPPED. I DID NOT VIDEO THE PROCESS WHEN THE PUPPY GOT HIT BECAUSE I DID NOT KNOW THAT THE PUPPY WAS GOING TO GET HIT. POOR CRYING PUPPY!

THIS INCIDENT IS AT SINGAPORE, PET SHOP NAME IS CALLED PET SAFARI, BESIDE THE SIMEI MRT TRAIN STATION. PUPPY CRYING AND CRYING AFTER IT GO HIT/WHACK EXTREMLY HARD BY THE PET SAFARI PET SHOP STAFF (I ALREADY UPLOADED THE CRYING PUPPY VIDEO IN YOUTUBE). THIS INCIDENT IS AT SINGAPORE, PET SHOP NAME IS CALLED PET SAFARI, BESIDE THE SIMEI MRT TRAIN STATION. 26 June 2007 Tuesday afternoon 12.58pm, I visited Pet Safari besides Simei MRT to look at their puppies section. To my right side was Pet Safari’s entrance door, in front of me were all the puppies, and to my left side, was about another 6 puppies. All puppies on display via glass ‘fish’ tank I walked left towards the 6 puppies and one Golden Retriever puppy caught my attention because it kept biting bits and pieces OFF a purple dog toy (look like hard sponge material), to chew/munch the pieces long enough, so that it can swallow. The puppy repeated the same process over and over again. I have video taped it down and uploaded the video into the ‘you tube’ website (), take a look. I looked carefully at the purple toy and reconfirmed that it is NOT a food but instead it’s a very harmful material to get into a dog’s body. I also noticed that there is no other objects/food tray/food except for this purple ’sponge’ toy. So I guess this 3 month old puppy must be really hungry! And IT it thought that this purple thing can be eaten and swallowed! Therefore quickly looked around for the person in charge of puppies, and saw this tall and slim Pet Safari guy staff talking non-stop on the wireless phone/handphone, I stood there waiting for him to ask me ‘Yes, may I help you?’ but he DIDN’T. So I waved my hand and told him the puppy is biting bits off/Swallowing the purple sponge, and asked whether if he can remove the purple toy from the puppy’s cubical. Upon hearing what I said, this tall guy walked to the inside of dogs’s section so that he can open the cage/feed dog etc. Initially i thought ”wow finally this pet shop staff is removing the sponge thingy so that the puppy will not eat it’. Then i stood there and looking from the outside of fish tank I can see the tall slim guy’s figure walking towards the Golden Retriever puppy. This guy, While STILL chatting on the wireless phone/handphone, opened the cage (LEFT side of glass tank). The Golden Retriever puppy was so happy when he sees him opening the cage!! The puppy quickly stood at the left side side of its glass tank, wagging its tail, nodding its head (I think puppy thought that somebody is going to open cage to give him a hug/pat/smile/rub/food). BUT INSTEAD, ONCE THE CAGE DOOR WAS OPENED, THE PUPPY IMMEDIATELY GOT WHACKED ON THE HEAD!! I am not sure of the degree of force the tall guy was using to hit the puppy’s head but IT MUST BE REALLY REALLY CLOSE TO FULL FORCE STRENGTH!!! For your info, thesmall display ‘fishtank’ (the 3 mth old puppy is in, like the other puppies) has glass glue that stick the four corners of the thick glass to the wall borders, which makes the ‘glass fish tank’ quite sound proof (the first puppy i looked at when i walk towards the dogs display section was a husky, it was young and excited when it saw me so i can see the husky barking and barking, but the barking sound i hear from outside the tank was very MUFFLED, and SOFT). So here comes the shocking thing. when the tall guy slap/hit/whack the puppy’s head(including the puppy’s left ear area), i could hear a LOUD THUD!! a loud SLAM/SMACK OR ‘PAP’ SOUND!!!!!! OH MY GOODNESS!!!!! The 1st milli-second i heard the SMACK sound and then immediately the 2nd milli-second I SAW THE PUPPY FLEW FROM LEFT ALL THE WAY TO RIGHT SIDE OF THE DISPLAY TANK!!! HUH???!!! WHEN THE PUPPY FLEW TO THE RIGHT SIDE, AGAIN HIS
HEAD/BODY/NECK SLAM AGAINST THE FISH TANK WALL!! OH MY GOODNESS!!!!! THE TALL GUY HIT THE PUPPY
THAT HARD!!!!??? THEN THE GUY SLAM THE CAGE DOORS AND WALKED AWAY!!!! WHILE HE WALKED AWAY HE WAS STILL TALKING OVER THE PHONE.

There were 2 Pet Safari customers/viewers beside me and I heard one of them saying ‘why did he hit the puppy?’ As I was still in total shock, I also asked them the 2 customers why the tall guy staff hit the puppy. They have no idea. If you were there, you could see the puppy’s total mood change. The poor puppy crept low, and with its head flat on its paws, you could see the puppy crying and kept blinking its wet eyes. IT IS TRAUMATIC!!! I kept trying to cheer the puppy up or at least convey a message to puppy that says ‘don’t cry puppy!! there are nice people outside the fish tank hoping to cuddle/pat/saying you! Its just that we are not allowed to get in!! Don’t cry!!’ Thereafter, I also separately told/asked 2 other Pet Safari pet shop staff of why the puppy got hit so hard that its to an extreme extent of getting classified as animal abuse. The 2 staff’s reactions to my question, was that they ‘couldn’t do anything about this hitting inccident’, ‘its just like that’, ‘don’t worry about the puppy’, ‘close one eye’, ‘pretend you never see the incident in Pet Safari pet shop’.

Can we all put all our heads together to think of something to stop this incident from happening again? Pls help. I do not have the tall guy’s name but how can we stop these from happening in this Pet Safari pet shop thats located beside Simei Mrt, Singapore?

Pomeranian

“The Pomeranian is a breed of dog in the Spitz family, named for the Pomerania region in Central Europe (which is part of modern eastern Germany, and northern Poland) and classed as a toy dog breed because of its small size. As determined by the ICF the Pomeranian is part of the German Spitz breed, and in German and many foreign speaking countries known as the Zwergspitz (`Dwarf` Spitz), or Toy German Spitz. Pomeranians are generally alert, but also stubborn and demanding of attention.

History
———-

The Pomeranian originated from the sled dogs of Greenland and Lapland, which were eventually brought into Europe in Pomerania. This region, bordered on the north by the Baltic Sea, has been under the control of Wendish Slavs, Poles, Swedes, Danes, Prussians and Germans, at various times, and most recently Poles again. This region extends from the west of the Rügen Island to the Vistula River. The name Pomorze or Pommern comes from Slavic “along the sea”. Breeders in Pomerania improved the coat and bred the dogs down for city living, but they were still 20 pounds or more when they reached England.

English breeders, through trial and error and Mendelean theories, are credited for reducing the dog’s size and developing the many colors. The Pomeranian of today is small due to selective breeding, but the breed still retains the hardy disposition and thick coat typical of dogs in cold climates.

Queen Charlotte first introduced the Pomeranian to English nobility; however, the Pom gained international popularity when her granddaughter Victoria returned from vacation in Florence, Italy with a Pomeranian named Marco.

The dogs owned by Queen Charlotte & Queen Victoria were much larger and were German Spitz and a Volpino Italiano. The same is true of any other historical Pom from before the 19th century.

The FCI classifies the German Spitz as one family consisting of the Dwarf (Pomeranian), Small and Standard (American Eskimo Dog), and Wolfsspitz (Keeshond). Additional close relatives of the Pomeranian are the Norwegian Elkhound, the Schipperke, and possibly the Samoyed.”

Yorkshire Terrier

“The Yorkshire Terrier (often called simply the Yorkie) is a breed of small dog in the terrier category. The long-haired terrier is known for its playful demeanor and distinctive blue and tan coat. Yorkies can be very small, usually weighing not more than 7 pounds (3.18 kg); the standard of this breed does not mention the minimum weight accepted nor does it specify a height. Based on registrations of the American Kennel Club, Yorkshire Terriers became the second most popular dog breed in the United States in 2006, trailing only the Labrador Retriever.

History
———-

Legacy

The Yorkie was bred as a ratter, used to kill mice and rats in small places. There is some evidence that they may have been used for hunting as well. Like most terriers developed in the early 19th Century, it was common for Yorkies to demonstrate their prowess as vermin killers in what were known as “rat killer”

As a hunting group, terriers specialize in pursuing animals (usually vermin) that live in dens or burrows. Animals that are cornered and defending their young will fight ferociously. Therefore, any dog that would willingly pursue them must have an extraordinary degree of courage; terriers are bred for that quality.

Ancestry

As the name implies, the Yorkshire Terrier originated in Yorkshire (and the adjoining Lancashire), a rugged region in northern England. In the mid-nineteenth century, at the peak of England’s industrial revolution, miners and mill workers from Scotland came to Yorkshire in search of work and brought with them several different varieties of small long-coated terriers, generally known as Broken Haired Scotch terriers (not Scotties). The specific breeds that make up the Yorkshire Terrier’s ancestry are not known, since the breeders at that time did not keep records of the bloodlines. Certain breeds, however, are commonly thought to be the main forebears. The likely source of the Yorkie’s small stature, long-haired coat and blue color are the Clydesdale, Paisley, Skye and Waterside terriers, all English terriers transported to England at various times. The English Black and Tan Terrier bloodline probably gave the Yorkie its signature color pattern. These breeds were all working dogs, used to keep vermin under control in the textile mills and coal mines.

The breed first appeared at an 1861 bench show in England as the Broken-Haired Scotch Terrier, named for the dog’s Scottish terrier ancestors. Early Yorkies were also known simply as Toy Terriers, in both rough and broken haired varieties. Yorkshire Terriers were given their breed name by 1874.”

Here is a quick video I made of how to teach this very cool Canine Freestyle trick- hurdles. I dont actually know what the trick is called by freestylers, so I made up the name ‘hurdles’ .

I didnt use a clicker during this exercise as is quite hard to hold the clicker and it clicks right under the dog which can make them confused. If possible you can get a friend to help mark the behavior.

Good luck! And let me know if you have any questions!

p.s. I did some sloppy training in this video! I give multiple cues such as ‘jump’ ‘hup’ and ‘jump through’ ! and am sloppy with the reward. Which makes me have to say, if you are really into training, make sure to film yourself to ess what you think you are doing to what you are actually doing! :)

Note: For Splash the word ‘yes’ is a conditioned reinforcer like some people use ‘good girl’ so you will see me say ‘yes’ and not give a treat afterwards. For Splash and Kiko the click means a treat always follows. Any other word means they might get one, they might not.

Clicker training works!

Shih Tzu

“The Shih Tzu is a dog breed which originated in China. The name is both singular and plural. The spelling “Shih Tzu”, most commonly used for the breed, is according to the Wade-Giles system of romanization. The Shih Tzu is reported to be the oldest and smallest of the Tibetan holy dogs, its vaguely lion-like look being ociated with the Snowlion. It is also often known as the “Xi Shi quan”

History
———-

Professor Ludvic von Schulmuth studied canine origins by studying the skeletal remains of dogs found in human settlements as long as ten thousand years ago. The Professor created a genealogical tree of Tibetan dogs that shows the “Gobi Desert Kitchen Midden Dog”, a scavenger, evolved into the “Small Soft-Coated Drop-Eared Hunting Dog”. From this dog evolved the Tibetan Spaniel, Pekingese, and Japanese Chin. Another branch coming down from the “Kitchen Midden Dog” gave rise to the Papillon and Long-haired Chihuahua and yet another “Kitchen Midden Dog” branch to the Pug and Shih Tzu.

James E. Mumford described the breed in an American Shih Tzu magazine, giving a picture of the versatile character of the Shih Tzu: “Nobody knows how the Ancient Eunuchs managed to mix together…And now here comes the recipe: A dash of lion, several teaspoons of rabbit, a couple of ounces of domestic cat, one part court jester, a dash of ballerina, a pinch of old man (Chinese), a bit of beggar, a tablespoon of monkey, one part baby seal, a dash of teddy bear and the rest dogs of Tibetan and Chinese origin.”
