Archive for historical dog names

Scientists make good and unusual dog names because they often sound a bit exotic, and are less ‘loaded’ than other historical figures. Here’s a list of some (biased towards physics cause I know more of them) which i thinks sound good as a dog’s name.

Make sure you find out a one liner about who that scientist was in case people ask the question. Wikipedia is a good place to start, so I will add links when I have a bit more time.

  • Einstein (great for a hairy dog)
  • Newton
  • Darwin (great for a mutt)
  • Edison
  • Millikan
  • Hubble
  • Halley
  • Celcius (only if you dont use that temperature scale at home)
  • Volta
  • Maxwell
  • Tesla
  • Marconi
  • Chadwick
  • Fermi
  • Cerenkov
  • Copernicus
  • Feynman
  • Cousteau (good for a water dog)
  • Faraday
  • Dalton
  • Archimedes
  • Babbage
  • Coulomb
  • Cavendish
  • Galvani
  • Goedel
  • Morse (a bit short and possibly sounds too much like other words)
  • Shockley

Another idea for inspiration is to look at wikipedia’s list of inventors and pick one with a catchy name who has invented something you find rather cool.

Don’t forget to check the common sense rules of dog naming before you pick anything you might regret later.
